How is the city perceived by its everyday users?
By distributing 200 disposable cameras among people of various ages, and different social, professional and family backgrounds in four European cities (Bucharest, Istanbul, Krakow and Vienna), we endeavour to capture the widest possible variety of inhabitants’ views of “their” city. This conglomerate of points of views and statements will be presented in an unbiased way on this website, and is intended as a highly individual perspective on the subject of “city culture”.
An information leaflet distributed with the cameras encourages participants in the four cities to take photographs of locations
- in which they enjoy spending time and that mean a lot to them
- that they are less fond of but still form part of the city for them
- that are typical of the particular city
The leaflet contains space for a brief commentary and information on each photograph.
Once the cameras have been collected and the images developed, an interdisciplinary jury makes a selection from all the photographs. The jury consists of three local photographers, artists and architects, as well as three further members from the “outside” (who do not live in the city, but have previously visited and experienced it in a different context). Each member of the jury independently selects five images (online).
The combined selections from the four cities will be presented to the public in an exhibition. The photos of all project participants can be viewed on the website here:
Wie wird die Stadt von ihren alltäglichen NutzerInnen wahrgenommen?
Durch die Verteilung von 200 Einwegkameras an Menschen unterschiedlichen Alters sowie mit unterschiedlichem sozialen, beruflichen und familiären Hintergrund in 4 europäischen Städten (Bukarest, Istanbul, Krakau, Wien) wird versucht, eine möglichst große Vielfalt an Perspektiven von StadtbenutzerInnen auf „ihre“ Stadt einzufangen. Dieses Konglomerat an Sichtweisen und Statements wird wertfrei auf dieser Homepage dargestellt und soll einen sehr individuellen Zugang zum Thema „Stadtkultur“ ermöglichen.
Das den Kameras beigefügte Informationsblatt fordert die TeilnehmerInnen in den 4 Städten auf, die Orte zu fotografieren,
- an denen sie sich gerne aufhalten und die ihnen viel bedeuten;
- die sie weniger mögen, die aber trotzdem für sie Teil der Stadt sind;
- die „typisch“ für die jeweilige Stadt sind.
Weiters bietet das Informationsblatt Platz für Kommentare und kurze Informationen zu jeder Aufnahme. Nach Einsammeln der Kameras und Entwicklung aller Aufnahmen wird von einer interdisziplinär zusammengesetzten Jury eine Auswahl getroffen.
Die Jury besteht aus jeweils drei ortsansässigen FotografInnen, KünstlerInnen und ArchitektInnen sowie drei nicht-ortsansässigen (diese wohnen nicht in der jeweiligen Stadt, haben sie jedoch bereits in einem anderen Kontext besucht und erlebt). Jedes Jurymitglied sucht unabhängig voneinander 5 Aufnahmen (online) aus.
Diese Selektionen aus den vier Städten werden gemeinsam in einer Ausstellung der Öffentlichkeit präsentiert.
